How to Write a Wedding Gift Thank-you Card

Thank-you Card

It is important to properly thank your guests for a wedding present or gift of cash. If you do not thank your gifts with a thank you card, it can be considered rude.

It is considered proper etiquette to thank a wedding guest for a gift with a personal thank you note, rather than just a verbal thank you. However, there are some do’s and don’ts for writing thank you cards.

Hand write Thank You Cards

Always hand write thank you cards, rather than using a pre-printed card, since these can seem a bit impersonal for this occasion. Try to use black or blue ink for thank you cards since this appears more professional than colored inks and is easier for your guests to read. Address the guest by Mr. or Mrs. on the envelop and by first name in the inside if you know them well or Mr. and Mrs. if it is a more formal relationship.

Contents of Thank You Card

You should make a list of who gave you what and write a short reference of the gift in the card. Make sure your guests know how much you appreciated their gift or how you will use it. If the gift was monetary, do not write the specific amount, but acknowledge that it was a monetary gift and how you will use it. Be sure to thank gifts who provided additional help with decorations or setup. Even if it is not a tangible gift, they still should be sent a proper thank you note.

Thank You Card Response Time

The bride and groom should send out thank you cards no later than six to eight weeks after the wedding. It is a good idea to send out a thank you note as soon as the gift arrives if it is sent before the wedding. This will help you get a head start. Guests do understand that many couples take a honeymoon after the grand affair, but it can be considered rude if you wait longer than eight weeks. Make sure to purchase thank you cards before the wedding so you are ready to begin on them after you return from the honeymoon. Make a goal of writing a certain amount of cards each week to break up the daunting task.
